recently, out of nowhere, i've become hyperfixated on The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet (gonna shorten it to TMS moving forwards). i've been aware of the song for years but only recently did my brain latch onto it. i'm not really surprised though? i love me a little bit of mystery, plus the song is a straight up banger.

speaking of which, here's the full song if you haven't listened to it yet:

now, for the backstory:

its the early 1980s. some guy in West Germany called Darius is recording songs off the radio so he can put them into a mixtape. he records TMS but since he cut out the bit with the radio host annoucing the song, he doesn't know the proper name of it, let alone the artist. he labels it as "blind the wind" and leaves the mixtape for 20 years or so. in 2004 he rediscovers the mixtape and by proxy TMS, but he still hasn't found the artist.

in 2007 his sister Lydia posts to various sites and forums, asking people to indentify the song, but no one has any luck in doing so. the song is forgotten once again.

in 2019 Gabriel da Silva Vieira was curious about the song and started asking around for information, but, again, no one knew anything. he uploaded the song to youtube (link above) and that essentially kicked off the "proper" search for the song, which is going on to this day.

.... this is so fucking cool, right???? there's this song that's been out there for almost 40 years yet nobody knows who made it or where it came from. this combined with the audio quality and the hard to interpret lyrics makes it really spooky, doesn't it??

speaking of hard to interpret lyrics, i actually did try to write down what i heard, along with some notes explaining my thought process behind everything. i got isolated vocals from u/TediousRS on the r/TheMysteriousSong subreddit, and then i spent almost an hour listening to the same song over and over. like, you know, a sane person. just giving you a heads up, the lyrics aren't 100% complete. there's some bits that i could not figure out for the life of me

[line?/blind?] the wind - people often say it's "like" but theres no audible /k/ sound. no other word makes much sense though
you came here running
take the consequence of living
there's no space
there's no tomorrow

there's no sensed communication - people have been also saying its "communicating" and while it WOULD make sense i just don't hear it. theres a "-tion" sound to me

[check?] it in, [take?] it out or the sun [will never/won't ever?]* shine - i know everyone assumes the lyrics are "check it in check it out" but ?? it doesnt really sound like it. sounds like "check it in, tear it out"?? it's really unclear. oh my fucking god in the high quality version of the song it sounds like check and take. i'm losing it
paranoid anyway in the subways of your mind

[line?/blind?] the wind
you're gonna suffer
let [a/her] smile be your companion
- someone in the comments pointed out it could be "her" and. yeah it could be
there's no place and there's no sorrow in the young and restless dreamer

[?] it in, [?] it out or the sun [will never/won't ever?]* shine - man now it sounds like take. or check?? god damn
paranoid anyway in the subways of your mind

[instrumental solo]

[?] it in, [?] it out or the sun [will never/won't ever?]* shine - now it sounds like nothing! cool! great
paranoid anyway in the subways of your mind

[check] it in, [take] it out, it's the summer blues
tear it in, tear it out, it's the real [you/excuse]
[check] it in, [take] it out, it's the summer blues
tear it in, tear it out, it's the real [you/excuse]
[check] it in, [take] it out, it's the summer blues
tear it in, tear it out, it's the real [you/excuse]
[check] it in, [take] it out, it's the summer blues
tear it in, tear it out, it's the real [you/excuse]

*this doesn't really matter as the sense of the lyric doesn't change, but i'm still pointing it out

ANYWAY, hoo boy. i really like this song. i hope one day we will find its artist. that is all goodnight
