the logo for beatblock

ooooo you want to play this game so bad oooooooooo

beatblock is an arcade-style rhythm game developed by bubbletabby and published by sky hour works. after being in development on and off for four years, the demo released on itch.io and steam on may 28th and june 21st 2024 respectively. gameplay is simple: you control a little circle guy called cranky, you spin and hit blocks. you beat them, perhaps (i am booed off the stage)

if the game sounds interesting go check it out!! like i said the demo is both on itch.io and steam. if you want to, you can also join the discord server to stay up to date and play custom levels the community made (some of them are truly incredible i'm not exaggerating)

november 2024 update!! the official server shut down the level forums. custom levels can now be found either on cranky's customs discord server or on beatblockbrowser.me!!!

mechanics

the game has eight different note types which i know seems like a lot but they're easy to get a hang of (all screenshots below taken by me :3)

blocks and holds

the primary note type. when it comes to blocks you simply hit them with your paddle, and with holds you have to... well. hold them. keep in constant contact

taps

taps have two versions: either paired with notes (gives them a special outline) or standalone (enclosing around cranky). they just have to be hit at the right moment

sides

sides need to be hit with the side of your paddle and require pretty good timing. i suck at them though so i play with side timings set to lenient lol

inverses

inverses are notes you have to hit with the back of your paddle. they're kind of hard to master and even though i personally am neutral about them there are a few inverse haters lol

mines and mine holds

mines are the opposite of blocks and holds. don't touch em

levels i like

these aren't in any specific order, i just add them as i go. i'm also gonna share gameplay videos if they exist

glitch cat - so stressed! (charted by CV35W)

one of the demo songs!! it's not the hardest but it's the first one i really took a liking to. both song and chart are really cool imo

lemKuuja - ouais ouais (feat. slyleaf) (charted by starcat_jp)

video footage by yours truly :3c man what ISN'T there to say about this level, i think it's my all time favourite lol. it's just so fucking cool!!! when i first played it my cheesy ass thought "this is a love letter to beatblock" and i think that description fits it perfectly

camellia - mystery circles ultra/u.u.f.o. (charted by slipty)

(contains some flashing lights)

hiii gameplay footage by me again. been fucking OBSESSED with this one lately the difficulty level is PERFECT for me. music goes hard also

toby fox - your best nightmare (charted by toatd)

warning: mild flashing lights during the transition between segments

c'mon it's undertale. this chart has so much effort put into it it's actually insane

leaF - calamity fortune (charted by merfmo)

gameplay by meee :3 banger song banger vfx. another level ive been obsessed with

yoasobi - idol (charted by nic)

i can't embed the video lol, just view it here

another absolutely stunning chart in terms of visuals. i'm not very good at it (i can barely get an A :p I CAN GET AN S+ NOW HEHE) but it's so well made i keep playing anyway

吉田夜世 - override (charted by ryian)

again, can't embed it. click here

top 10 songs that go hard. the spinning is also really fun :3

frog96 - letter to the black world (charted by mawbit)

the black bars are so cruel lmao. song is absolutely bangin' though

big giant circles - sevcon (charted by dawnandnight)

from what ive seen this one is considered like. the baseline of good levels. absolutely deserved its so fun even after dozens of plays

dot96 - make it funky (charted by cytruss)

do i have to say anything. just look at it. i didn't even know you could mess with cranky's size like that lmfao

in conclusion i find this game really, REALLY fun. i've been playing it since june 29th, a week after the steam demo dropped. to whoever reblogged a post about it onto my dash that one faithful day: thank you because if not for you i wouldn't be here talking endlessly about it lol.

big shoutout to everyone who makes custom levels; y'all are awesome and so skilled it kinda scares me (i tried making my own level once and it was NOT that easy. and i wasn't even doing any crazy effects or anything)

once again go play the game thank uuuuu heart emoji
